Unless they are brought under the control of rational thought, they are likely to intensify as we dwell on them or as new experiences amplify them. It’s just like the snowball picking up more snow on the way and growing bigger. And bigger. That big snowball gathers greater momentum as it hurtles down the hill. Soon it will acquire an unstoppable energy. Quite the same thing happens to feelings. They become powerful enough to control our thoughts and actions.   I was planning to take a holiday from my #WriteAPageADay commitment today when a friend’s message on WhatsApp woke me up this morning with the blow of a sledgehammer. The message was sent last night. As I am an early sleeper, it got my attention only this morning. And I decided that the message demanded more than a personal response, because I’m being bombarded with similar views from many sources these days. The crux of the message is this: As times change, politics need change too. Congress has lost itself. Marxism is redundant now. Two little kids were playing in a kiddie swimming pool. One of them was a Hindu and the other – you guessed it – a Muslim. The children were also conscious of their being incompatible with each other. This incompatibility awareness is in the DNA of people. We all want to prove that we are better than the others. Narendra Modi made nationalism India’s national pastime. The kind of nationalism that he advocates is a very narrow-minded view which amounts to his personal conviction that India is the greatest country because he was born in it. Hand in hand with that narcissism walks xenophobia. Modi’s xenophobia is not so much fear as hatred of the others. He has succeeded in raising hatred to the stature of a virtue. In 2019, Time reported that 90% of the hate crimes in the past decade happened during Modi’s reign as PM. Today, three years later, that figure will be higher, no doubt. 99% of hate crimes in the last decade in India must have happened with Modi’s tacit support. In 2016, an online dictionary cited xenophobia as the word of the year. The ascent of Trump with his kind of xenophobia is what prompted the dictionary to highlight that word. Professor Jie-Hyun Lim, Director of Research Institute of Comparative History and Culture (RICH) at Hanyang University in South Korea thinks that nationalism is “an act of treason.”  He also says it limits the capacity of imagination which is really why it is treason.
