Understanding Religion - my new book

Religion is everywhere. It shapes cultures, inspires acts of compassion, provides meaning to millions, and continues to influence politics and public life across the globe. Yet, despite its pervasive presence, many of us know surprisingly little about what religion is, how it evolved, and why it continues to matter in the modern world.

This realisation led me to write my latest book, The Simplest Guide to Religion: Understanding Humanity's Search for the Sacred.

The book began as an attempt to answer a simple question: How can an ordinary reader make sense of religion without getting lost in theological jargon, ideological debates, or sectarian arguments? It was a question that rose within me first because I failed to make sense of whatever was happening in the name of religion in my country.

We encounter religion in political speeches, social media debates, conflicts, and cultural controversies. At the same time, many people continue to turn to religion for comfort, identity, and spiritual fulfilment. To understand our world, therefore, we must first understand religion itself.

The Simplest Guide to Religion offers an accessible introduction to some of the most important questions about religion:

·         What is religion?

·         Why do human beings create religious systems?

·         How did the world's major religions develop?

·         What is the difference between monotheism and polytheism?

·         What roles do faith, reason, scripture, and authority play?

·         How have religion and modernity interacted?

·         Why has religion survived despite repeated predictions of its decline?

The book does not seek to promote any particular faith tradition. Nor is it an attack on religion. Instead, it invites readers to explore religion as one of humanity's most enduring and influential creations. Personally, the writing of this book has radically altered my attitude to religion: I have learnt to accept it as an inevitable part of human existence.

Written in clear, non-technical language, this book is intended for students, teachers, general readers, and anyone curious about the role of religion in human history and contemporary society.

I also wish to acknowledge the assistance of artificial intelligence as a research aid during the preparation of this book. Like any tool, it proved most valuable when combined with critical reflection, human judgment, and careful revision.

If you have ever wondered why religion continues to matter in an age of science, technology, and globalization, this book is for you.
