Karnataka election

I didn’t celebrate the victory of Congress in the Karnataka assembly elections. I celebrated the BJP’s defeat.

Congress lost its charm long ago. It is now a party without a vision, without a leader, and without a worthwhile purpose. People might have voted for it because they don’t have any other choice. Until his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi was a toddler in politics. The Yatra did bring a lot of sense and maturity to his personality. He may emerge as a great leader one day. He does have certain qualities which most Indian politicians don’t have. He has genuine concern for people. He is capable of reaching out to people unlike most political leaders who surround themselves with their chelas and security personnel. And he is willing to learn. He has much more to learn, however.

Congress had become an utterly corrupt party and that is why it was thrown out by India in the last many elections all over the country. Will the new Congress government in Karnataka provide a clean governance? I doubt.

The BJP government in Karnataka, which the people have thrown out now, was even more corrupt than any Congress government in the state. That’s something we can repeat about the BJP government in any state as well as the Centre. BJP’s corruption is hydra-headed and endlessly protean. You will never know in which form it will appear next. It is not only about financial corruption. The BJP is most imaginative when it comes to corruptibility. It can corrupt anything, even our gods.

Bajrang Bali refused to be corrupted in Karnataka this time, however. I celebrated that. I hope other states will learn something from Karnataka.

My own state, Kerala, will go to the polls only in 2026. So I have time to decide who to vote for. If the elections are held in Kerala just now, I will abstain from voting. I don’t trust the left or the right or the centre. In other words, it won’t matter a bit who rules since every party is the same in practice: every party is a public looter and nothing more.

The BJP is different, however. It not only loots money but also people’s faith and food and dress and language and culture and their very integrity. That’s why its defeat in Karnataka made me dance. The defeat of a mammoth evil is almost as good as the victory of the virtuous. At least, it raises our hopes.

While I agree much with your sentiments here, I disagree about abstention from voting. The privilege of voting is one to embrace and, yes, that sometimes means going for the least obnoxious choice...but that's the point. To not vote gives the default to the worst. It fascinates me how similar or two governments are, albeit with different agendas. Our 'opposition' party offers little alternative in truth... Hey Jo... YAM xx

    1. This is what I used to believe, Yam - that not voting is giving the mandate to the worst. But now it's Tweedledum and Tweedledee that we have. No question of the better.

  2. BJP tagged as corrupt without any major proof. Congress has been saying 40% commission but there is no credible proof to prove. People voted for freebies like money, which is not viable. How can a government give Rs 2000 each month for all people? The intention of Congress is to tag people as poor since it's the hallmark of people like Soros.

  3. If you don't want BJP to win, you have to vote for somebody else. Maybe the others are no better but at least they won't rob your soul.

  4. Almost every party has become corrupted. That's the problem sometimes to vote. Our people are also patient when it comes to political corruption in the name of caste. Regional parties too worst. Our Telugu regional supremos like Chandrababu Naidu plundered Billions of dollars and established business empire in many countries. He had only 2 acres of land when he entered the politics.

WHAT DOES THE SAME VOTER PERCENT OF CHAIWALA PROVE ?

IT PROVES THAT HIS HARD CORE VOTER IS INTACT ! INSPITE OF CORRUPTION !

THAT HARD CORE VOTER,WILL STAY WITH CHAIWALA,IN 2024

CONGI SHOULD NOT EVEN TRY TO TAP THEM - IT IS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY !

SPEND MONEY ON THE DEV SCHEMES OF NON CHAIWALA CORE VOTERS !

THE DALIT AND MUSLIM VOTES,ARE ALSO KEY ! CONGI HAS NOW BECOME THE ALT TO THE BJP,AND CONG HAS TO SPREAD THIS JACKPOT,FOR THE NEXT 12 MONTHS,TO THE NEW ENTRANTS, IN THE VOTER LIST !

  6. THE ONLY STATE IN DRAVIDISTAN WHICH HAD CHOSEN CHAIWALA HAS KICKED HIM OUT !

    VOTER PERCENTAGE IS 73 PERCENT

CLEAR SIGN THAT PEOPLE WERE FED UP,WITH CORRUPTION - ALL THAT MATTERS, IN SOUTH STATES !

RURAL AREAS VOTER PERCENTAGE, WAS HIGHER THAN URBAN - WHICH MEANS THAT,CHAIWALA DIRECT FUNDS TRANSFER ETC. HAVE ALL FAILED !

DALITS HAVE VOTED EN BLOCK,FOR CONGRESS ! DATA WILL ALSO PROVE THAT MUSLIMS TILTED THE SCALE IN SEVERAL SEATS. THE VOTING PERCENTAGE OF DALITS& MUSLIMS WILL ALSO SHOW A SHARP RISE

NOW IF CONGRESS DOES NOT DELIVER VALUE TILL 2024, TO BE A MODEL FOR THE SOUTH (AT THE MINIMUM), THEN THEY HAVE ONLY THEMSELVES, TO BLAME.

ALL THEY HAVE TO DO,IS TO STOP CORRUPTION, MAKE THE STATE EFFICIENT, PROVIDE QUICK TANGIBLE GAINS TO DALITS AND MUSLIMS, ENSURE NO RIOTS & BAN VANARS OF BAJRANG DAL..........SAMIR SARDANA

IT IS A DEFEAT, FOR CHAIWALA !

CHAIWALA PUT ALL HIS ENERGY INTO KARNATAKA !

KARNATAKA IS THE MODEL TO DEFEAT CHAIWALA, IN SOUTH INDIA AND MAHARASHTRA !

KARNATAKA IS PROOF THAT MONEY AND PANWARI BANIA MEDIA OF ZEE/ABP AND OR-NOOB GOO-SWAMI CANNOT BUY VOTES IN SOUTH INDIA - AS NO ONE LISTENS, TO THESE GARBAGE CANS CLUTTERING !

KARNATAKA IS ALSO PROOF THAT SAYING THAT A MONKEY HANOOMAN, WAS BORN IN KARNATAKA OR MAHARASHTRA,DEPENDING ON WHERE THE POLLS ARE - WILL NOT CON,THE SOUTH INDIANS !

CHAIWALA SET FIRE TO THE TAIL OF HANOOMAN THE MONKEY,AND THEN REALISED,THAT THE MONKEY COULD NOT FLY ! THUS THE MONKEY BURNT THE CHAIWALA !

WHERE INDIANS HAVE MONEY,AND THERE IS NO POVERTY (LIKE IN SOUTH INDIA), PEOPLE WANT FACILITIES,EFFICIENCY AND NO CORRUPTION !

  7. A very balanced and nuanced assessment, Tomi. It's good for democracy and for our country that the Congress is finally getting its acts together. No party should be allowed to have a monopoly. There has to checks and balances. In a way, the vastness and the mind-boggling diversity of our country is a huge asset. Five more states are going to polls this year, and then then big polls next year!

Ivan the unusual friend

When you are down and out, you will find that people are of two types. One is the kind that will walk away from you because now you are no good. They will pretend that you don’t exist. They don’t see you even if you happen to land right in front of them. The other is the sort that will have much fun at your expense. They will crack jokes about you even to you or preach at you or pray over you. This latter people are usually pretty happy that you are broke. You make them feel more comfortable with themselves even to the point of self-righteousness. Ivan was an exception. When I slipped on the path of life and started a free fall that would last many years before I hit the bottom without a thud but with enormous anguish, Ivan stood by me for some reason of his own. He didn’t display any affection which probably he didn’t have. He didn’t display any dislike either. There was no question of preaching or praying. No jokes either. Ivan was my colleague for a brief period at St Joseph’s

Machiavelli the Reverend

Let us go today , you and I, through certain miasmic streets. Nothing will be quite clear along our way because this journey is through some delusions and illusions. You will meet people wearing holy robes and talking about morality and virtues. Some of them will claim to be god’s men and some will make taller claims. Some of them are just amorphous. Invisible. But omnipotent. You can feel their power around you. On you. Oppressing you. Stifling you. Reverend Machiavelli is one such oppressive power. You will meet Franz Kafka somewhere along the way. Joseph K’s ghost will pass by. Remember Joseph K who was arrested one fine morning for a crime that nobody knew anything about? Neither Joseph nor the men who arrest him know why Joseph K is arrested. The power that keeps Joseph K under arrest is invisible. He cannot get answers to his valid questions from the visible agents of that power. He cannot explain himself to that power. Finally, he is taken to a quarry outside the town wher

Joe the tenacious friend

AI-generated illustration You outgrow certain friendships because life changes you in ways that nobody, including you, had expected. Joe is one such friend of mine who was very dear to me once. That friendship cannot be sustained anymore because I am no more the person whom Joe knew and loved to amble along with. And Joe seems incapable of understanding the fact that people can change substantially. Joe and I were supposed to meet one of these days after a gap of more than two decades. I scuttled the meeting rather heartlessly. Just because Joe’s last messages carried words that smacked of intimacy. My life has gone through so much devastating fire that the delicate warmth of intimacy has become repulsive. Joe was a good friend of mine while we were in Shillong. He was a post-graduate student and a part-time schoolteacher when I met him first. I was a fulltime schoolteacher teaching math and science to ninth and tenth graders. My dream was to postgraduate in English literature an

Kailasnath the Paradox

AI-generated illustration It wasn’t easy to discern whether he was a friend or merely an amused onlooker. He was my colleague at the college, though from another department. When my life had entered a slippery slope because of certain unresolved psychological problems, he didn’t choose to shun me as most others did. However, when he did condescend to join me in the college canteen sipping tea and smoking a cigarette, I wasn’t ever sure whether he was befriending me or mocking me. Kailasnath was a bundle of paradoxes. He appeared to be an alpha male, so self-assured and lord of all that he surveyed. Yet if you cared to observe deeply, you would find too many chinks in his armour. Beneath all those domineering words and gestures lay ample signs of frailty. The tall, elegantly slim and precisely erect stature would draw anyone’s attention quickly. Kailasnath was always attractively dressed though never unduly stylish. Everything about him exuded an air of chic confidence. But the wa

Levin the good shepherd

AI-generated image The lost sheep and its redeemer form a pet motif in Christianity. Jesus portrayed himself as a good shepherd many times. He said that the good shepherd will leave his 99 sheep in order to bring the lost sheep back to the fold. When he finds the lost sheep, the shepherd is happier about that one sheep than about the 99, Jesus claimed. He was speaking metaphorically. The lost sheep is the sinner in Jesus’ parable. Sin is a departure from the ‘right’ way. Angels raise a toast in heaven whenever a sinner returns to the ‘right’ path [Luke 15:10]. A lot of Catholic priests I know carry some sort of a Redeemer complex in their souls. They love the sinner so much that they cannot rest until they make the angels of God run for their cups of joy. I have also been fortunate to have one such priest-friend whom I shall call Levin in this post. He has befriended me right from the year 1976 when I was a blundering adolescent and he was just one year older than me. He possesse
