I didn’t celebrate the victory of Congress in the
Karnataka assembly elections. I celebrated the BJP’s defeat.
Congress lost its charm long ago. It
is now a party without a vision, without a leader, and without a worthwhile
purpose. People might have voted for it because they don’t have any other
choice. Until his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi was a toddler in politics.
The Yatra did bring a lot of sense and maturity to his personality. He may
emerge as a great leader one day. He does have certain qualities which most
Indian politicians don’t have. He has genuine concern for people. He is capable
of reaching out to people unlike most political leaders who surround themselves
with their chelas and security personnel. And he is willing to learn. He
has much more to learn, however.
Congress had become an utterly
corrupt party and that is why it was thrown out by India in the last many
elections all over the country. Will the new Congress government in Karnataka
provide a clean governance? I doubt.
The BJP government in Karnataka,
which the people have thrown out now, was even more corrupt than any Congress
government in the state. That’s something we can repeat about the BJP
government in any state as well as the Centre. BJP’s corruption is hydra-headed
and endlessly protean. You will never know in which form it will appear next.
It is not only about financial corruption. The BJP is most imaginative when it
comes to corruptibility. It can corrupt anything, even our gods.
Bajrang Bali refused to be corrupted
in Karnataka this time, however. I celebrated that. I hope other states will
learn something from Karnataka.
My own state, Kerala, will go to the
polls only in 2026. So I have time to decide who to vote for. If the elections
are held in Kerala just now, I will abstain from voting. I don’t trust the left
or the right or the centre. In other words, it won’t matter a bit who rules
since every party is the same in practice: every party is a public looter and
nothing more.
The BJP is different, however. It not
only loots money but also people’s faith and food and dress and language and
culture and their very integrity. That’s why its defeat in Karnataka made me
dance. The defeat of a mammoth evil is almost as good as the victory of the
virtuous. At least, it raises our hopes.

ReplyDeleteWhile I agree much with your sentiments here, I disagree about abstention from voting. The privilege of voting is one to embrace and, yes, that sometimes means going for the least obnoxious choice...but that's the point. To not vote gives the default to the worst. It fascinates me how similar or two governments are, albeit with different agendas. Our 'opposition' party offers little alternative in truth... Hey Jo... YAM xx
This is what I used to believe, Yam - that not voting is giving the mandate to the worst. But now it's Tweedledum and Tweedledee that we have. No question of the better.
DeleteBJP tagged as corrupt without any major proof. Congress has been saying 40% commission but there is no credible proof to prove. People voted for freebies like money, which is not viable. How can a government give Rs 2000 each month for all people? The intention of Congress is to tag people as poor since it's the hallmark of people like Soros.

DeleteAlmost every party has become corrupted. That's the problem sometimes to vote. Our people are also patient when it comes to political corruption in the name of caste. Regional parties too worst. Our Telugu regional supremos like Chandrababu Naidu plundered Billions of dollars and established business empire in many countries. He had only 2 acres of land when he entered the politics.

A very balanced and nuanced assessment, Tomi. It's good for democracy and for our country that the Congress is finally getting its acts together. No party should be allowed to have a monopoly. There has to checks and balances. In a way, the vastness and the mind-boggling diversity of our country is a huge asset. Five more states are going to polls this year, and then then big polls next year!
