How truth catches up

Satyameva jayate” is India’s national motto.   That may be one of the many ironies in a county steeped in corruption of all sorts.  Truth and falsehood go hand in hand in India.  That’s why we, Indians, never had the concept of the devil in our mythology.  We never polarised the good and the evil into watertight compartments.  Our gods were a queer mixture of both good and evil.  That’s one of the best things about our civilisation.

Neither truth nor falsehood is absolute except in the pure sciences.  In actual life, they mingle obscenely.  Narendra Modi’s admission that he has a wife is a recent glaring manifestation of that mingling.  Why did he admit it now in the nomination papers submitted by him at Vadodara?

Is it any indication that the truth is catching up with Modi?  I don’t think so.  Modi is more shrewd than Chanakya, Goebbels, or Machiavelli.  Modi must be having some trick up his sleeve by disclosing his marital status at this point of time, the cynic in me says.

Modi’s brother, Somabhai, has explained that the marriage was a mere ritual carried out in Narendra’s boyhood and the couple never lived together.  Fine.  That’s understandable.  Modi belonged to the kind of background in which children, ignorant and innocent, were subjected to the bond/bondage of marriage by parents who thought they were doing the right thing.  When Narendra grew mature and realised the absurdity of that marriage, he might have chosen to ignore it.  That he did not marry again goes in his favour.

But Narendra Modi had denied his marriage up to now.  Why does he declare it publicly now?

What could be the political motive?  This is the first question that will rise in the mind of any politically aware citizen, as it did in mine.  But I’m not a Modi or a Machiavelli to figure out the answer.

In my own foolish way, I think truth is catching up with Modi.  It’s not the polarised truth I mentioned above.  It’s not any absolute truth.  There are no absolute truths, I reiterate, except in the pure sciences.  It’s the personal truth.  The skeletons in the personal cupboard have to spill out some time or the other before we bid goodbye to the planet.  Is that happening with Mr Modi?  Is this the beginning of a series of admissions that he will have to make eventually?

Peace of mind lies in keeping the cupboard empty of skeletons.  Cupboards are not meant for keeping skeletons, in fact.  Truth has a way of penetrating the locks of the personal cupboard.  Has it started doing the job with Mr Modi?  I’ll be happy if it has.  I’ll begin to support Mr Modi if he dares to go a few steps ahead in this regard.

Mr Narendra Modi becoming transparent will be the best miracle of the century.

  1. Sir as you know that i am also firm opposer of modi but one of his supporter had asked a question fromn me : he said that what about rahul gandhi who raped sukanya devi.. no one opposed him and modi's marrige is his personal life.. it is no way related to public... so that's not a criteria to judge his potential and he is accounable to public about public affairs not his personal affairs... modi is the cm of gujrat and he has boost up the economy of gurjat in every aspect which shows he is a good leader.... no matter he was a chaiwala as we should not judge people from his past... he was a chaiwala out of pain and not choice.... we all have harped on the string of gujrat riots... but have ignored other factors which he potrayed.... in his motto 'ab ki baar modi sarkar' dont show his arogance .... he wanted people to judge on his individual personality and not caste vote in the name of just party... ( these question were very critical and intresting so i decided to put them in front of you ) :p

    2. Witty answer sir.... but that was not the answer i want... many people has a dark past where we we aresomtimes forced to do somthing.... but the real power is to come up from our past.... we can judge him on the basis of development he did in gujrat..... congress has ruled for 10 years... i agree that lots of development took place but lots of corruption followed.... kejriwal first said that he has prove agaist sheila dixit of 70 page document and when he became the cm he asked dr. harshvardhan to prove any avidance against sheila dixit... isnt it rediculous... before election he said that rapes are ibcreasing in delhi because of congress but when his sarkar took position and rape in cp took place then he blamed police for not doing anything ..... kejriwal has always done drama but no work ... he ran away and want to just prove his presence... if a chaiwala can function better than iitian then lets all of us give him a chance ( i am not at all supporter of modi but i am enjoying in opposing you.. :p just wanted your fantastic and logical answers )

    3. Come on, Manish, don't be childish. There's no development in Gujarat except what happened there in the 1980s before Modi came to power. See today's Hindu, for example:
      http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-opinion/the-gujarat-muddle/article5898792.ece

Gujarat model is a myth. Modi is going to be the next myth. And the rest, do try to understand what I've written from the right perspective. It's not about the past of Mr Modi. It's about his future. It's about what game he is planning.

    4. Matheikal sir, the problem is the literate middle class is greedy. Everybody wants that growth rate he promises and a fat bank balance, so all these facts will fall on stone deaf ears. Sukanya Devi joke has gone too far without a shred of evidence being provided. Gujarat Development is not as rosy as it is painted but when a population chooses to be seduced, it is difficult to convince them otherwise. Let them bear the brunt and get it.

    7. Dear IS, I'm sorry that a student of mine dragged this to this level. I know Sukanya Devi is a political joke, I know what Rahul Gandhi is though I don't support him. I also know that it's difficult to convince people of the truth, since no one is interested in truths.

    8. Manish, you have no right to bring here the arguments provided by your friends and relatives. I'm no proxy fighter. And I wouldn't like you to be one either. For me, my writing space is sacred, more sacred than my teaching space.

  2. Good read Tomichan. It is not which party is going to win. The real question is after the elections are over will the Citizen find himself to be the winner for having given his trust or will he be a loser for another term?

    1. Amen to that, Fayaz. Will the citizen have the power? That's the question. That's what democracy is all about. And that's all I want, give power to the citizen. Empower, in current parlance.

  4. I think someone must have found out that he is married, so he came out with the truth. He is now trying to cover up about hiding his marriage by coming up with all sorts of excuses. And he would be shamefaced after his comments on how a marriage is a hindrance in politics.

  5. Maybe a "prevention is better than cure" approach, now that he is at the doorstep of the PMO. As someone mentioned above, he doesn't want anyone else to dig it up and ruin his chances.
Or possibly, as you said, some unravelling is happening and this is the first of it. We can only wait and see.

  6. Ok. I admit I'm pro Modi. I have led life under Congress and under BJP. I don't see anything else but my security as a woman who can be free as a bird even at night without fearing rape. During Congress rule, every few days we would get holiday from school due to communal riots in the old city. In BJP rule, only one riot - 2002. Peace after that. It's now 12 years since I've witnessed any communal riot. During Congress rule, I used to witness communal riots every 6 months. These figures don't come up in media and I don't know why. If anyone wants to know why NaMo was selected as CM by Gujarat 3 times in a row, it's because he was able to protect women and stop frequent communal riots. While talking about 2002 Gujarat riots, I don't know why people forget Emergency and 1984 riots! Not to forget many other small riots that we have witnessed in the history of our country.

As far as Kejriwal is concerned, he's nothing but drama. These are my views and so mentioning them.

Sorry for such a long comment. Couldn't stop myself :)

    1. Don't be sorry, Pankti. I love your comments because they are genuine. I respect genuine views irrespective of how they stand against mine.

I'm a potential biographer of Modi. Once I wrote a novella based on the 2002 riots and published it in an anonymous blog. I'm still retaining the anonymity for technical reasons. I may expand it into a proper novel once Modi becomes more powerful. Your input is valuable for that. I may contact you for more input! And thank you in advance.

Prelude to AtoZ

From Garden of 5 Senses, Delhi [file pic] Hindsight gives an unearthly charm and order to the past. There can be pain too. A lot of things could have been different, much better, if only we possessed the wisdom of our old age back in those days. As a writer put it, Oedipus, Hamlet, Lear and a lot of those guys must have thought, “I wish I had known this some time ago.” Life is a series of errors with intermittent achievements. The only usefulness of the errors may be the lessons they teach us. Probably, that is their purpose too. We are created to err so that we learn, I dare to put it that way. I turn 64 in a month’s time. It’s not inappropriate to look back at some of the people whom life brought into my life so that I would learn certain lessons. No, I don’t mean to say that life has any such purpose or design or anything. Life is absurd. People come into your life as haphazardly as vehicles ply on your road or birds poop on your head. Some of these people change the chemist

Why I won’t vote

From Deshabhimani , Malayalam weekly Exactly a month from today is the Parliamentary election in my state of Kerala. This time, I’m not going to vote. Bernard Shaw defined democracy , with his characteristic cynicism, as “ a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve .” We elect our government in a democracy. And the government invariably sucks our blood – whichever the party is. The BJP and the Congress are like Tweedledum and Tweedledee though the former makes all sorts of other claims day in and day out. BJP = Congress + the holy cow. The holy cow has turned out to be quite a vampire and that makes a difference, no doubt. In our Prime Minister’s algebra, it is: (a+b) 2 which should be equal to a 2 and b 2 . There is an extra 2ab which is the holy cow. In George Orwell’s Animal Farm , the animals revolt against the human master and set up their own nationalist republic. Soon politics develops in the republic and some pigs become leaders. The porcine

How Arvind Kejriwal can save himself

Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have a clear vision. Eliminate all opposition. Decimate them or absorb them. My previous post [link below] showed a few people decimated by them. Today let’s look at the others: those who are saved by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP]. 1. Himanta Biswa Sarma  This guy was in Congress and faced serious charges related to the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam. He also faced corruption charges related to drinking water supply in Guwahati. His house was raided by the Central Bureau of Investigation [CBI]. Then he switched over to BJP and all his crimes just vanished. It’s as simple as taking a dip in the Ganga and all your sins are forgiven. Today he is the chief minister of Assam. Nothing is heard of all the charges that were levelled against him. 2. Amarinder Singh  This former Captain in the Indian Army was a Congressman until Modi’s Enforcement Directorate [ED] started raiding him, his son and his son-in-law. He put an end to all those raid

The Good Old World

Book Review Title: Dukhi Dadiba and irony of fate Author: Dadi Edulji Taraporewala Translators: Aban Mukherji and Tulsi Vatsal Publisher: Ratna Books, Delhi, 2023 Pages: 314 If you want to return to the good old days of the late 19 th century, this is an ideal novel for you. This was published originally in Gujarati in 1913. It appeared as a serial before that from 1898 onwards in a periodical. The conflict between good and evil is the dominant motif though there is romance, betrayal, disappointment, regret, and pretty much of traditional morality. Reading this novel is quite like watching an old Bollywood movie, 1960s style. Ardeshir Bahadurshah, a wealthy Parsi aristocrat in Surat, dies having obligated his son Jehangir to find out his long-lost brother Rustom. Rustom was Bahadurshah’s son in his first marriage. The mother died when the boy was too small and the nurse who looked after the child vanished with it one day. Ratanmai, Bahadurshah’s present wife, takes her

Kejriwal’s Arrest in Modi’s Kurukshetra

For some mysterious reason, Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest reminded me of Haren Pandya. Maybe, because Pandya’s 21 st death anniversary is approaching (26 March). Have you forgotten Haren Pandya? He was the Home Minister of Gujarat before Narendra Modi assumed dictatorial powers in that state. Modi chose to teach humility to Pandya by making him the Minister of State for revenue. Pandya chose not to learn humility from Modi and resigned from that post in Aug 2002. Remember Gujarat of 2002? You should. A fire engulfed a train on 27 Feb 2002 killing 58 Hindu pilgrims who were returning from Ayodhya where they had gone to discover their god, not very unlike Christopher Columbus undertaking a voyage to discover India and messing it all up. What caused the fire in the train? Lord Ram knows probably. The upshot was that there was a riot in Gujarat by Hindus against Muslims. Haren Pandya is one of the BJP leaders who gave statements in many places indicting Modi for the riots. He asser
